What are veneers?
Veneers are a restorative dental treatment that cover stained or chipped teeth and even hide gaps. They’re made of either porcelain or composite material, and address a number of dental issues, such as:
Worn down teeth
Broken or chipped teeth
Irregularly shaped or uneven teeth
Gaps between teeth
Composite veneers
If you only have minor chips, cracks or discolouration, then material we use for fillings (composite) may be all that’s required.
Porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneer treatment involves bonding a thin porcelain coating to the front surface of the tooth. They are strong, durable, look very natural and are resistant to staining. You porcelain veneers are custom made in a lab, so two appointments to the are required.
If you’re unsure of which type of veneer is most appropriate, don’t worry; we’ll provide you with all the advice and guidance you need.
How are porcelain veneers applied?
Preparation
The first step involves reshaping the surface of the tooth equal to the thickness of the veneer. We then make an impression of the tooth and send it off to our specialised lab where your custom porcelain veneer is made. In the mean time before your next appointment we’ll apply a temporary veneer to the tooth.
Bonding
When fitting the veneer we firstly check its fit and colour. Some trimming may be required to get the perfect fit. We then prepare the cement that will bond the veneer permanently to the tooth. We also shade the cement so it matches the natural colour of your teeth.
How long do veneers last?
Veneers generally last for around 10 years and potentially much longer. As with all things dental, it depends on your oral hygiene. Brushing, flossing and rinsing must be regular habits, and twice yearly check-ups with your dentist is also recommended.
